In accordance with Holy Cross' developmental philosophy and practices, the First Grade allows children to grow at their own rate. Using phonics, basal readers, classic and popular literature, reading is our main focus.  Science and Social Studies are covered through the reading program.  The First Graders work in co-operative groups as well as ability based groups.  Working around themes taken from science, the seasons and yearly events, the children create projects.  These projects grow in depth through the year from coloring and pasting to writing and researching.

In math, First Graders learn how to add and subtract, how to tell time to the hour and half-hour and how to count coins to $1.00.  The First Grade uses a variety of teaching methods and manipulatives to reach the learning styles and needs of all the children.
